24/25 Oregon Battle of the Books at Camas Ridge

OBOB is BACK at Camas Ridge

Oregon Battle of the Books | 3rd-5th Grades

The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant.  Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.

Camas will start hosting practices in November prior to the Fall Break, continuing through January and February. Students who want to participate should begin reading the books as soon as possible and over the winter break. All books are in our school library and at the Eugene Public Library; they are grouped together & specially marked with OBOB on the spine.

Join us for our Informational Q&A on Tuesday October 21, 2024, 7:00PM - 7:30PM on Zoom (Meeting ID: 814 6629 8161 Passcode: obob2425)

  1. SIGNING UP FOR A TEAM – BY NOVEMBER 12TH, 2024

Please register this year as part of a team. Teams can have three to five members. We strongly recommend teams of at least four students as it helps to split up the book reading responsibilities and brings more brains to the table. If you have five students on your team, one person will have to rotate out during battles as only four students can participate in the battle at a time. Talk with your student and if they are interested prompt them to talk with their friends to create a team. Students can also register as an individual and we will help place them on a team. Due to scheduling logistics, third grade students must be on a team with other third grade students. Fourth and fifth grade students may be on teams with mixed fourth and fifth grade students if desired.

2) Reading from the OBOB book list: Participating students do not need to read all the books but as a team students should decide how to split up the list so all books have been read by someone within the group. (The 24/25 OBOB Book list is included below.)

3) Discussing books with their teams: Practices will be held over lunch at school.

4) Competing in battles with their teammates: A typical battle is a tournament or game, somewhat like Jeopardy, in which student teams earn points by correctly answering questions about the books on the book list. All school battles will be completed by the end of February. The top teams from Camas Ridge will have the opportunity to participate in the Eugene 4J OBOB Battle this spring!

Volunteers Needed! Sign up on the form above when your child is signing up for a team!
